Doing Things God’s Way, Not Our Way

December 10, 2024

Hey Clawson Family!

Song:

Scripture:

For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord. “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.”

— Isaiah 55:8-9

Devotional:

As humans, we often think we know what’s best for our lives. We make plans, set goals, and pursue paths that seem logical and beneficial. But how often do we stop to seek God’s guidance and align our desires with His? Doing things God’s way may not always make sense to us, but it is always the best way.

When the Israelites were faced with the walls of Jericho (Joshua 6), God instructed them to march around the city for seven days and then shout. From a human perspective, this strategy seemed unusual, even foolish. Yet, when they obeyed, the walls fell, and God delivered the city into their hands.

Similarly, when Peter had fished all night and caught nothing, Jesus told him to let down his nets again. Despite his doubt, Peter obeyed and caught so many fish that his nets began to break (Luke 5:4-6).

These stories remind us that God’s ways often defy human logic, but they always lead to His glory and our ultimate good. Trusting His way requires faith, humility, and surrender. It’s about recognizing that He sees the whole picture while we see only a fragment. When we insist on doing things our way, we risk missing out on God’s blessings. Proverbs 3:5-6 encourages us to “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” This means putting aside our preferences, timelines, and strategies to follow His lead, even when it’s uncomfortable or unclear.

God’s way may not always seem easy or logical, but it is always perfect. Trust Him, obey Him, and watch how He works in your life for His glory and your good.

Journal:

In your journal, answer the following questions:

1. Are there areas in your life where you’ve been relying on your own understanding instead of seeking God’s direction?

2. What would it look like to fully surrender those areas to God today?

  1. How can you cultivate trust in God when His way doesn’t align with your expectations?

Training:

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for reminding me that Your ways are higher than mine. Help me to trust in Your wisdom and not lean on my own understanding. Teach me to surrender my plans and follow Your direction, even when it doesn’t make sense. May my obedience to You bring glory to Your name.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
