Tearing Down Idols

December 6, 2024

Hey Clawson Family!

Song:

Scripture:

Pull down your father’s altar to Baal and cut down the Asherah pole standing beside it.” (Judges 6:25)

Devotional:

In the Bible, we see numerous accounts where God calls His people to tear down physical idols, such as Gideon destroying the altar of Baal (Judges 6:25-27). This act wasn’t just about physical destruction; it symbolized a rejection of misplaced worship and a return to wholehearted devotion to God.

Like Gideon, we are called to confront and remove the idols in our lives—even when it’s hard. Sometimes this means breaking generational cycles or reevaluating our values. God’s desire is for us to experience freedom in Him, unbound by the things that have kept us in spiritual chains.

Today, God is calling us to examine our hearts. What has taken His place in our lives? Is it success, comfort, or approval from others? The process of tearing down idols is not easy. It requires courage, humility, and the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Yet, when we surrender our idols, we find the freedom and peace that comes from worshiping God alone.

Journal:

In your journal, answer the question: What idol can you tear down today for the sake of your walk with God and your family?

Training:

Heavenly Father,

I come before You humbly, recognizing the idols in my heart that have drawn me away from You. Forgive me for placing anything above You. Help me to surrender these things and to find my satisfaction and purpose in You alone. Holy Spirit, give me the courage to tear down idols and the wisdom to walk in obedience to Your Word. Be the center of my life, my greatest treasure, and my deepest joy.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
